From Waves to Woodgrain: The Brothers Behind the Craft
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, brothers James and Terence Smith took devastation and turned it into inspiration. What began as a garage operation in Beach Haven in 2012 became Garden State Surf & Art on 82nd Street— a business built on grit, passion, and reclaimed beauty.
The duo purchased the old gas station on 82nd Street and, in true DIY fashion, gutted and remodeled it themselves. By summer 2013, the doors were open, and the journey officially began.
At first, it was all about custom hand-shaped surfboards and artwork— a natural fit for two lifelong surfers. But when the renovation required reclaimed wood, something clicked. The raw, weathered texture of driftwood wasn’t just a practical choice — it became the soul of their work. What started as necessity evolved into identity.
Soon, the brothers were crafting custom furniture, mantels, and artwork with the same passion they once poured into shaping surfboards. Reclaimed wood became their canvas.
Raised with sawdust in their veins, both brothers found their calling early. James, a born carpenter with an eye for structure. Terence, an artist and educator with a gift for form and flow. Together, they blend precision and creativity into every piece they touch.
